Directions

1. Decide on a style that complements your music and that every band member likes.

Your writing style should go along with the type of music that you make. The voice of a metal band should sound different from that of a folk singer-songwriter.

2. If someone else is writing for you, make sure they can write in the same style.

Ask for samples and be sure that all of the writers understand the style that you have chosen. Have them read what you have written in the past so they understand.

3. Write everything in the active voice.

Despite the tone and style of your writing, stick to the active voice for all of your official band text. The active voice is more clear and straightforward. For an explanation on the difference between active and passive voice click here.

4. Stick to this singular tone for all of your band's writing, changing only if you address different audiences.

All of your blog entries, newsletters, bios, descriptions on your web presences, and all other text by your band. Sometimes you might need to change your voice slightly depending on the audience that you are addressing. So, your press materials should have a more formal version of your particular sound while your blog should be more informal and personal. Either way, it will still be your own unique voice.
