Directions
1. Write about fresh news only.
Newsletters should be exciting and announce really big news. You will want to write about things like upcoming shows and projects; new albums, songs, and merch; and photos highlighting the news. Also mention any media coverage you have received like mentions in blogs, podcasts, and magazines.
2. Include the following necessary bits of information:
- A subject line
- Subscribe/unsubscribe links
- Basic introductory and contact information
- Copyright information
The last three items should appear in small print at the bottom of each newsletter.
3. Keep your newsletter content brief and to the point.
You want to give all of the who, what, when, where, why, and how information within the first paragraph of your letter. Draw them in with teasers and interesting headlines.
4. Make each email visually appealing with colors, logos, and pictures.
Plain text newsletters are bland. Adding photos and pictures will draw in more people. Link the pictures so that readers can click through to your site to see more.
5. Call your fans to action.
Just because you have told fans about a new album or tour does not mean they will go find the songs and buy the tickets. Call them to action with clear directions. Give them links and instruct them where to go to find more information.
6. Check spelling and grammar thoroughly, and then have an editor double-check everything.
Spelling and grammatical errors are embarrassing. Carefully spell-check everything and then forward it to someone who is a good editor to perform a second proofreading before sending it out to the fans.
7. Limit newsletters to special announcements, no more than two a month.
The last thing that you want to do is spam your fans. Only send out newsletters for really important announcements. We recommend sending no more than two newsletters a month.
