Directions

1. Create accounts on some popular musician forums.

We recommend becoming active on the Just Plain Folks forums as well as CDBaby's. These two sites in particular serve the needs of independent musicians; you will probably find a lot of artists just like you there. Of course there are a lot more resources out there that can work for your more specific questions. Check out our listing of Musician Forums.

2. Add an avatar and use the same image consistently.

If you do not have an avatar, click here to learn what it is and how to make one. Having an avatar makes your presence on that message board look more official and using it consistently on multiple sites works to strengthen your brand.

3. Search through threads to find topics relevant to you.

Check out the list of current threads on the message board. If you have questions about something specific like gear, make sure to post them in the correct area. However, if there are not any threads that deal with your topic feel free to create a new one.

4. Participate actively in user conversations.

The key to connecting with other musicians is to be active on forums. This means conversation, not promotion. Forums are a place to make real connections with other musicians, so keep your posts genuine. Unless the forum thread is specifically asking for bands to plug themselves, don't do it.

5. End each post with a signature with your music and website info

You want to avoid spamming people, but having a signature so people reading your posts can check out your website and music is definitely appropriate.  Add your band name and website URL to your posts. The best ones are classy and simple.
