Set Pricing on Audio Mastering is Ridiculous!

Please, let me explain.....

We have all heard great recordings, really bad recordings and everything in between. That is because all recording studios, their environments, engineers and artists are different. If recordings are not created equal, then how can professional audio mastering be. I have seen so many companies that tell you what the cost to master your music will be upfront before they ever hear it? To me that is similar to calling your auto mechanic and telling him that you hear a noise in the left front end of your car, and they tell you it will cost $1,000.00 to repair it, and they haven't even looked at your car yet?

There are 2 downfalls with the upfront pricing approach.

#1. You under pay for mastering services: Your recording may require much more of the engineers time, but the engineer working on your project decides the amount you have paid only covers their time for X amount of hours, so at the end of the alotted time, they say good enough. Now your music never reaches it's fullest potential and you have now underpaid for mastering services.

#2. You over pay for mastering services: Your recording maybe fantastic and only need a final tweak. You have now paid the same amount as the guy who's recording was in bad shape and required much more of the engineers time. Not fair, and you have now overpaid for mastering services.
