Full Description
Sound Exchange is a performance rights organization for sound recordings within the U.S.. Sound Exchange collects royalties for performances of music over "noninteractive" digital-stream broadcastes (that is, things on the web that stream music and mimic terrestrial radio). If you own the sound recordings of your music and it gets played publicly you can register with Sound Exchange.
Whenever songs are transmitted digitally, royalties are owed to the artists on that sound recording. SoundExchange is a nonprofit organization that collects and distributes royalties for the digital transmission of music.
Digital transmission includes everything played on internet radio, satellite radio, and the audio channels included in a digital cable subscription. If you have been a featured artist on any such program or hold the copyright to a sound recording that has been played digitally, you can claim royalties. However, you cannot collect any of your royalties until you register officially with SoundExchange. This process involves a bit of paperwork and takes about 90 days to finalize, but the membership is completely free. If you aren’t sure if you are a featured artist, check out the Unregistered List tab to find a huge list of artists who can but have not yet applied for membership. If you are an artist and also the copyright holder, sign up as both to get all of the money you are owed.
