Full Description

MySpace is perhaps the most prominent web presence sites for musicians. It's a social networking site with a large number of musician friendly features.

Among the features that MySpace has are:

  • Music player for 6 songs of your music, with images, links, and the ability for other MySpace users to put it in their profile.
  • Photo album
  • Blog
  • Videos
  • Comments
  • Gig Calendar

One of the more interesting features is the "friends" functionality, which allows other users of MySpace to declare themselves your friend. Many bands use this friends feature in order to reach out to potential new fans, and show how popular they have become.

There's a number of issues with MySpace that musicians should be aware of. Foremost is that the songs are always downgraded to a very low bitrate for the music player. This lowered quality can turn off some music lovers. Because of this, it's not necessarily the best place to feature your music. Also, bands need to be aware of the fact that MySpace advertises on their website in your profile. This can distract your hard-won visitors and send them elsewhere.

To make your profile look good, you need to either be very good at coding HTML, or use one of the MySpace profile generators, which can customize the look of your profile. The MySpace Tools category of this website has a list of them available.

MySpace has recently launched MyAds where you can advertise your music and your profile page.

As much as I hate myspace, as a music consumer, I still gravitate towards the site to quickly discover whether a band is worth pursuing.
