An artist needs to have his/her work copyrighted to protect against piracy of their music. It is a good idea to have written music sheet and/or tabulature to your music, both in a lock box or safety deposit box, and to have it copyrighted. If you don't and your song gets stolen and recorded by someone else, you have no legal rights unless you can prove the song is yours.
