I hope you pick a great name, most bands with average-sounding/not searchable names makes it hard for people to remember you. Posted on 2008-09-11 14:18:01 |

Yes - agreed. With the Web, it's advantageous to pick a name that's unique and one that you can get a domain name for. This is important not only for branding purposes, but also to be able to search on yourself and see what's being said about your band. We talk in the book that you don't want to name your band "The Googles" for obvious reasons (and trademark reasons as well). It's interesting that in the past band names like "The Cars" and "Oasis" were the norm. However, because of their common names, finding the official websites for these bands is difficult and non-intuitive. If you go to "thecars.com" it takes you to a model car site while "oasis.com "takes you to a company that works with silicon... Actually, to get to the ofifical Oasis website you have to head to some site called oasisinet.com. Oasis I Net Dot Com? That's not too obvious now is it? Posted on 2008-09-15 11:45:00 |

I remember when my band was looking for a name. I was working in a gas station next to this giant meat processing plant and all the workers would stop buy for coffee, snacks, smokes, and maybe gas. I asked this very grizzled guy what i should call my band and he said, with no hesitation, like he was thinking about it all day... "Pontius Pilate and the nail-drivin' 5" i was stunned. even so i did not use the name (being a good catholic) so its up for grabs if you want to make a statement, but i don't now if you want to make that statement.

(If you become famous you owe me big time!) Names that I've come up with/found that I haven't used myself are:
Pumping Up Napolean..(think it's the name of a book) Speckle And The Sky High Rockers The Slackers The Chippies Mama's Basement
Check them out to make sure nobody else has the names. Good Luck!

If you are trying to come up with a punk band name might try to talk with your band members and think of something punk and unique instead of something cool. most of punk band like rancid, nofx, mxpx, pennywise started underground and didnt think of having a cool band name. think punk! =) Posted on 2009-07-14 12:50:21 |

Well Eric it's been like a year and a half. Come up with anything yet? If not. may I suggest "Washout." Seems like it would be appropriate at this stage. Main Entry: wash·out
Pronunciation: \ˈwȯsh-ˌau̇t, ˈwäsh-\
Function: noun
Date: 1873
1 a : the washing out or away of something and especially of earth in a roadbed by a freshet b : a place where earth is washed away2 : one that fails to measure up : failure: as a : one who fails in a course of training or study b : an unsuccessful enterprise or undertaking

What I did with my band was pick a phrase from a song I (we) really liked, that we covered a lot, and that was actually kind of accurate in describing us, so I picked: "Tired Starlings" (from "White Room" - as CREAM was going strong in the late 60's (and so was our band), but due to infighting (as with Cream) it broke up for about 37 years (sound "Cream-ily" famiiiar ? - close anyway) and we re-formed about 4 years ago, and lasted a whole TWO years before infighting took the band down again.. ARGHH Good thing we were a Blues band, because man, we got plenty of Blues there!! But it was fun while it lasted - BOTH times! :) So, as I had already grabbed the "TiredStarlngs.com" domain - which is NOT really about that band any longer, but just points to a MySpace page now that a guitarist friend of mine and I use to put out "cyber-collaborations" (under the name Tired Starlings) and also our solo works and basically now whatever we want to put there (he's from the Netherlands, I'm from New Jersey, so we've never met except online). We're both lead blues guitarists and we can both do rhythm as well so we can get backing tracks out we can use) for out collaborations. it's not a method that will always work to get a cool band name, but it's one way, IF you've got something like a phrase you all like from a song you play that doesn't sound terrible as a band name! Oh - and the name our original 60's band had has since been snatched up by another band, so, we had to come up with something else - I figuired someone would ask! And thanks for the GREAT site here!! I just joined and it looks like a place full of great info and friendly people - which is hard to find these days, Jim S Posted on 2009-12-29 23:17:31 |

Also - just had another thought! - you could just give up and call it... QUITS!! (the band name = QUITS) Yeah - not all that great.. Tired Starlings (see above) works better, IMO, and that method does too I think! Jim S

Had a band back in the day (i'm new btw :-) love the book guys! best buy ever) we went through a huge list of names i picked out. i always loved parvo bitter sweet name i suppose. anyways it's got a ring and it's disgusting enough for a punk band. pitch it to your band i think they might like it, if not love it.
cheers, -Jonzy! Posted on 2010-07-03 02:08:14 |
