The IndieGuide Works! Who knew?

Steve Chatterton
Whitby, Ontario

I was just twittering with @beatnikturtle about some of the basic things I've learned from the guide and how they seem to be working for me now that I'm trying to put them into motion.

I go on at length about it in a recent blog, but the jist is that I let it be known to my contacts on Twitter & Facebook that I'd like to get a simple little video for this 1-minute song I was putting into one of those bragging rights-only song writing contests.

After using the "arm's length" approach to find a collaborator, I found out one of my old friend's ran a video game company & now we have a "cross-promotion" going on. They did the video for me on spec in return for my commitment to come up with a song they can use royalty-free in an upcoming iPhone app.

Mad props to the IndieGuide for giving me the idea & the Beatnik Turtle gang for starting it up & keeping it going.

Hey Steve. Thanks for sharing the story. It's a perfect example of the "arm's reach" networking principle as you say. One of the best things about the internet is being able to find and contact other creative and talented people out there. Sounds like you found one.

The best thing to do when you (or anyone) hits on a successful collaboration like this is to cross-promote each other. That way you get your music in front of the collaborator's audience and the collaborator gets his video in front of your audience. New fans can emerge in the process for both sides. So, in a way, you're broadening your "arm's reach" with regard to fans as well -- not just getting a video for your music.

Keep us all posted on any other success stories you have!

This is what we can networking. It is amazing what the Internet can lead to and it only requires a little imagination and creativity.

Best of luck!
