Create a press kit for your band

Overview

When you, as a musician are posing MP3s, don't just take the default settings. Change them to make it have the maximum playability by potential fans. Also ID3 tag all of your music so that they can find you -- no matter where they got the file in the first place.

Related Categories: MP3 Tools

Estimated Preparation time: 10 minutes per song

Estimated Result Time: Immediate

Estimated Cost: FREE

What You Need to Do This:

Songs that you want to change to an MP3 format in either WAV, or CD form

An MP3 Encoder

An MP3 player or tagger to set the ID3 tags

Directions

1. Change your MP3 Encoder to these settings [PULL book Settings]

...

2. ...

3. Listen, Subscribe, & Verify the Podcast's Format & Style

Don't just take the written words about the format from the website as gospel. Download, listen to, subscribe, and verify that your song would fit the format of the show if you reached out to them. You may find that given their personality or style that one of your other songs is a perfect fit for the show - not just the one you want to promote.

4. Follow the Submission Instructions and/or Ask First

Like most musicians, many have dayjobs and do other things with their time. They're busy. They have feelings. They're human. Some have set up a submission process at their site, but many haven't. If they have a submission process and you are sure your song is a good fit for the show, follow their instructions.

If they don't have submission instructions, then you should email them. Your email should:

introduce who you are, your band name and website;

tell them you've listened to their show (here's a tip - prove it by naturally telling them what you heard and what you liked about their show);

tell them you have a song that you think would be fitting for the show;

tell them it's podsafe; and

ask about how best to submit it to them

If you hear back, follow their instructions and be sure to give them the key details again - the name of the song, your band name, your website, and where listeners can find the song they're playing for sale or download.

5. Thank Them

Subscribe to their feed so you can hear the show and once it's been played - thank them! Do one better and promote their show on your website. Tell your fans where you've been played.

By following the steps above, you'll increase your odds of being played on podcasts. Better yet, the next time you have a song to get played and heard, you already have a connection with a podcaster who has played you before.

Create a physical and online press kit to help you get booked for live shows.

Overview

A booking kit is one of the few times an indie musician needs printed materials. These have to look perfect because you will be handing them to venues and bookers that you want to impress. You should also have these materials available online. Below is what you need to make a booking kit. Click here to learn how to make a press kit.

Estimated Preparation time: 3 hours

Estimated Result Time: Immediate

Estimated Cost: Low

What You Need to Do This:

A CD of your songs

Your band bio

Fact sheets

All press materials/mentions you have collected

Band photos

Directions

1. Create a cover page.

The cover page should be a letter addressed to the person you are giving the press kit to. This should have your contact information, website, and basic details about your music and band. Put your contact information on every page of the kit. This page should be eye-catching and visually appealing since it is the first thing that will be seen.

2. Include your band bio.

A bio is a one-page sheet about the band. This should be story-based, easy to read, and interesting.

3. Include your CD.

Include your latest CD. Make sure all of your contact information is on the CD itself, in case it gets separated from the rest of your kit and the case.

4. Include a fact sheet about your band.

A fact sheet is a one-page reference sheet with basic facts about your band. This includes:

Band name

Tagline

Style and genre of music

A list of established bands you sound like

Hometown

When you were formed

Discography

Band member names

Instrumentation

Notable coverage or facts about your band

5. Include any press clippings, reviews, or positive mentions.

If you have press coverage, include a page of quotes and reviews of your band, live show, or albums.

6. Include a list of where your music has been played.

Include notable radio, television, and media play of your music. If you've licensed your songs in films or other notable ways, include those.

7. Include an 8x10 photo (optional).

Most press wants to be able to download digital versions of your photos from your website.

8. Make sure all this information is also available online at your website.

You should have a section on your website that includes all the above information so the press can download the information at their convenience. Services such as SonicBids and ReverbNation provide online press kits that can house this information for a fee.

Overview

A booking kit is one of the few times an indie musician needs printed materials. These have to look perfect because you will be handing them to venues and bookers that you want to impress. You should also have these materials available online. Below is what you need to make a booking kit. Click here to learn how to make a press kit.

Create a physical booking kit to help you get booked for live shows.

Overview

A booking kit is one of the few times an indie musician needs printed materials. These have to look perfect because you will be handing them to venues and bookers that you want to impress. You should also have these materials available online.

Related Categories: Online Press Kits

Estimated Preparation time: 3 hours

Estimated Result Time: Immediate

Estimated Cost: Low

What You Need to Do This:

A CD of your songs

Band photos

All press materials/men you have collected

Testimonials

A DVD of live shows (Optional)

Directions

1. Create a cover page.

The cover page should be a letter addressed to the person at the venue, festival, or booking agency you are giving the booking kit to.

Include your latest CD or CDs. If you have a live album, be sure to include this one. Make sure all of your contact information is on the CD itself, in case it gets separated from the rest of your kit and the case.

4. Include your draw in your cover page or band bio.

Venues, festivals, and booking agencies want to know your draw. Include your mailing list count as evidence of your draw and/or, if you use Eventful to help you plan your shows, then include your Eventful Demand number as it's a verifiable number from a third party. If you're just starting out playing live, skip this step.

5. Include a song list (if you play covers).

Include a list of the cover songs you play live as this gives the venues, festival, or booking agency an idea of the type of music you play.

6. Include any press clippings, reviews, or positive mentions.

If you have press coverage, include a page of quotes and reviews of your band, live show, or albums.

7. Include any testimonials from fans, other bookers, or other venues.

8. Include a list of where else you've played.

If you've played out a lot, include a list of the key venues or festivals you've played to prove your performing experience. If you're just starting out playing live, skip this step.

9. Include an 8x10 photo (optional).

10. Include a stage plot (optional).

You could include a stage plot - a diagram of the instruments in your band, the equipment you have (amps, keyboards, etc.), and your stage, monitor, and microphone needs. This is usually used after you get a gig, but it may be helpful to bookers to see your setup and sound needs.

11. Include a live DVD (optional)

Include a video of your band performing live if you have one, it is the most convincing proof of your ability to entertain a crowd.

12. Make sure all this information is also available online at your website.

You should have a section on your website that includes all the above information so venues, festivals, and booking agencies can download the information at their convenience. Services such as SonicBids and ReverbNation provide online press kits that can house this information for a fee.

Create a press kit in order to get booked for live shows.

Overview

Having a press kit is one of the few times an indie musician needs printed materials. These have to look perfect because you will be handing them to bookers. These are all the ingredients of a great press kit. You should also have these materials available online.

Related Categories: Online Press Kits

Estimated Preparation time: A few hours

Estimated Result Time: Immediate

Estimated Cost: Low

What You Need to Do This:

A CD of your songs

Band photos

All press materials you have collected

Directions

1. Include your CD

Include a CD of your latest album and make sure that all of your contact information is on the CD itself, in case it gets separated from the rest of your kit.

2. Create a cover page

This should have your contact information, website, and basic details about your sound setup or other needs. Put your contact information on every page of the kit. It should be eye-catching and visually appealing since it is the first thing that will be seen.

3. Write your band bio

A one-page document of the history of the band and each member. This should be story-based, easy to read, and interesting.

4. Attach press clippings

A page of quotes and reviews of your past gigs. Include a gig history of everywhere you have played to prove your performing experience.

5. Include an eight-by-ten photo

This is the standard size used by most venues. Have a high-res version available to print from your website. Sometimes venues will want a glossy hard copy of the photo; find out ahead of time what they expect.

6. Include a live DVD

Live video of your band performing is the most convincing proof of your ability to entertain a crowd.

7. Include Testimonials

If you have these, include them. These statements can make a booker who is on the fence ready to commit to a gig. All of these materials should include your contact information and should be placed in a presentable plain folder or envelope.

Your email should:

introduce who you are, your band name and website;

tell them you've listened to their show (here's a tip - prove it by naturally telling them what you heard and what you liked about their show);

tell them you have a song that you think would be fitting for the show;

tell them it's podsafe; and

ask about how best to submit it to them

If you hear back, follow their instructions and be sure to give them the key details again - the name of the song, your band name, your website, and where listeners can find the song they're playing for sale or download.

5. Thank Them

Subscribe to their feed so you can hear the show and once it's been played - thank them! Do one better and promote their show on your website. Tell your fans where you've been played.

By following the steps above, you'll increase your odds of being played on podcasts. Better yet, the next time you have a song to get played and heard, you already have a connection with a podcaster who has played you before.
